MATH 600: Assessing Mathematics Learning and

Modeling Mathematics in the Middle Grades

ANNOUNCING A VDOE MATH SCIENCE PARTNERSHIP SPONSORED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

THROUGH GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY

PRIORITY: (A Focus on Designing Performance-based Assessment and Modeling Math)

Middle grades classroom teachers and specialists (Math, Coaches, Special ed, ESOL, GT and administrators) who support middle school math teachers (priority grades 6-8)

DATES:

Session 1:

Summer institute: June 24-27(Mon-Thurs) 8:30-3:30pm

Fall Follow-up: Sept. 16 (M), Oct. 21(M), Dec 2 (M) from 3:30-600pm and
One designated School Based Lesson Study date with Substitute funds

Session 2:

Summer institute: July 29-Aug 1 (Mon-Thurs) 8:30-3:30pm

Fall Follow-up: Sept. 16 (M), Oct. 21 (M), Dec 2 (M) from 3:30-600pm and
One designated School Based Lesson Study date with Substitute funds

LOCATION: GMU FAIRFAX Campus

Teachers will participate in

  • Summer professional development institute (3 graduate credit) focused on mathematics content and pedagogy
  • Modeling mathematics ideas aligned to the VA Standards of Learning (SOL)
  • Designing Performance Based Assessments

Follow-up School-based Lesson Study in the Fall semester

Benefits to the teacher participant in the program

  •  3 graduate credits in Mathematics course work
  • Course text and Resource notebook
  • USB with lessons and assessment developed by participants
